Solving His Own Murder: A Review of Ghost Story (The Dresden Files #13)

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

Rating: 5/5 ⭐️ ❤️‍🔥

Imagine the scene: Harry Dresden wakes up in a train station, reminiscent of Neo in The Matrix, with a train thundering towards him. But wait, there’s a twist! This isn’t the Harry Dresden we knew — this is Ghost Harry Dresden, back from the afterlife following the shocking events of the last book.

Just in the nick of time, an unseen force yanks him out of the path of the oncoming train, saving him from becoming a ghostly smear. Suddenly, he finds himself in the ‘In Between’, and he’s got a mission that’s as unusual as it is thrilling — he’s going to solve his own murder!

However, being a ghost isn’t all spectral shenanigans. He can’t interact with the living without a little supernatural assistance. So, he teams up with Morty, the ectomancer who has the unique ability to communicate with the dead. But Morty’s got his own problems — he’s under siege by a swarm of wraiths. It’s like a tower defence game come to life, with Morty’s personal ghost, Sir Stuart Winchester, leading the defence.

Harry soon discovers that the world has changed drastically since his death. The extinction of the Red Court Vampires, a direct result of his actions, has left a power vacuum that’s turned the world into a danger zone. His friends are fighting tooth and nail to keep things under control in their home turf of Chicago.

Harry and Morty join forces with Murphy and the War Council, Chicago’s current vigilante protectors. His murder investigation takes a backseat as he dives headfirst into a mission to save a group of wayward kids.

From here, the story kicks into high gear, with the stakes and the action skyrocketing. Despite being dead, Harry is more lively than ever, and he’s having a blast with his ghostly predicament. We get a sneak peek into Bob’s living arrangement inside his skull, see Molly Carpenter’s character develop further, and meet old characters in a new light.

So, buckle up for a rollercoaster of an adventure as Harry the Ghost tangles with a dangerous old foe, cracks a murder case, and gears up for his next spectral escapade.

This is my first book of 2023 and I give it 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
