Dresden Files Unfolded: The Thrills of 'Skin Game'

Rating: 4.7/5 ⭐️

The Dresden Files' unique blend of urban fantasy and detective noir continues to evolve and surprise in its 15th instalment, "Skin Game." Picking up right after Cold Days, Harry Dresden is chilling on the island of Demonreach. Dresden's solitude is interrupted by the chilling presence of Queen Mab, who brings with her a mission that Dresden cannot refuse.

The crux of "Skin Game" revolves around a heist. Dresden, already uncomfortable with his role as the Winter Knight, now has to work with the Denarians. Queen Mab's mission for him is clear: assist Nicodemus Archleone, a long-time foe, in a heist to steal from the vault of Hades, the god of the underworld. The very idea is audacious, and the stakes are astronomical. Dresden, ever the reluctant participant, is wary of Nicodemus' intentions. The very prospect of working alongside the Denarians is a bitter pill to swallow. Yet, this might also be his chance of taking a shot at Nicodemus.

He brings in Karrin Murphy, to be his muscle and watch his back during the heist. Butters, the quirky medical examiner has turned into the Batman of Chicago, working with Bob to fight the good fight. I am sad that Bob is no longer working with Dresden, their interactions were always hilarious. I am very glad that Michael Carpenter is back in this book. Seeing him back in action, wielding Amoracchius once more, is both exhilarating and heartwarming. Dresden also finally meets his daughter, Maggie who is hanging out at the Carpenter house with Mouse, the bestest, smartest dog in the world. There is also a surprise reveal about who the entity within Dresden's mind is.

The action during the heist inside the Vault of Hades is intense and very entertaining. It showcases how Dresden is not just good at magic and spells but also at scheming up a plan. The showdown at Michael's home post-heist was tense with high stakes. It also had an awesome moment which had me jumping with excitement. But, I don't want to spoil it for you folks.

All in all, Skin Game is a very entertaining book telling the story of a wizard and private investigator who has come a long way. Skin Game is the 15th Dresden Files novel and the story is still fresh and evolving. This book has set up characters and events in motion for the upcoming adventures of Harry Dresden and I am all for it.
