"Defiant" by Brandon Sanderson: A Thrilling Conclusion to the Skyward Series

Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

"Defiant," the final book in Brandon Sanderson's Skyward series, wraps up Spensa's story in a way that's both exciting and satisfying. The book picks up with Spensa coming back from the Nowhere, a mysterious place that's given her new and powerful abilities after merging with Chet. But these abilities and her time away have made her feel out of place with her team, Skyward Flight.

Completely overpowered and armed with the abilities of a deliver, which she cannot fully control, Spensa is torn between seeing herself as a weapon and as a person with real feelings. Shoving down feelings has never done anyone good and it doesn’t work for Spensa. Add to that, she ends up accidentally hurting civilians in a mission to thwart Superiority which makes her rethink her aggressive ways, bloodlust and war cry. I certainly missed her outbursts like “Tremble and fear, all enemies!, For we shall shake the air with thunder and blood! Your doom is imminent!” and “That soup tasted better than the blood of my enemies.”

It is her gran gran, Hesho and her friends in the Skyward team who help her out of the “I’m a weapon” mentality. They're like a family, and they play a huge role in keeping her grounded. Each member of the team, from the brave Hesho to the others, brings something special to the table. They remind Spensa that she's more than just a fighter; she's a friend, a leader, and a part of something bigger.

The real standout with the MVP moment was Spensa's Gran-Gran, Becca Nightshade. She's a standout and makes the story exhilarating whenever she is in the scene. Her fight and final stand against the Superiority’s armada was truly badass.

Overall, "Defiant" is a great ending to the Skyward series. It's got everything from space battles to deep personal growth. Sanderson wraps up Spensa's story in a way that's about more than just fighting; it's about friendship, understanding, and the human spirit.
